About
The sport of women's lacrosse is played throughout England in schools, clubs and colleges. As with all other team sports, it requires skilled umpires with a detailed knowledge of the rules and how to apply them to a game situation.
Umpiring in England is overseen and regulated by the Rules and Umpiring Committee of the English Lacrosse Association, Women's Division, known as the "R & U" . In order to step onto the field as an umpire it is first necessary to have attended one of the training courses organised by the R & U, to have passed the relevant written and field tests, and to have obtained a rating at an appropriate level.
Games are controlled by two or three umpires, depending upon the level of play. There may also be a fourth official working on the sideline with the timer and scorer. As well as good knowledge of the rules and a significant level of fitness, good positioning by the umpires, communication with and support for the other officials are key to a safe and enjoyable game for all concerned; the umpires are a team in their own right.
